Javier Girotto & Aires Tango

The group started in 1994 from an idea of the argentinian saxophone player and composer, Javier Girotto, who, inspired by his own musical roots blended them with jazz and created a new musical style. Directly inspired by the great Astror Piazzolla, Javier Girotto together with Aires Tango built up a repertoire of original music in progressive evolution, both for its improvisation and for its endless musical material.

In 1995 the Aires Tango were the interpreters of the sound track of the theatrical show ”I Testimoni “ performed by Gianmarco Tognazzi and Alessandro Gassman , and of the movie “Banditi” by Mignucci with Ben Gazzara and Lumi Cavazos. The following year the first Aires Tango disc came out, titled Malvinas, from the argentinian name for the Falkland Islands, for many years scene of an absurd war.

At the end of year 1997 the second CD entitled “ Madres” came out edited by BMG-Victor, that recalled the style begun in the first CD and brings him to an ulterior evolution. In four pieces, particularly important is the presence of a string quartet and in two other pieces the accordion of Antonello Salis.

Since 1998 the Aires Tango group partecipated in numerous Musical Festivals all over Italy, among which Rumori Mediterranei in Roccella Ionica, Nuoro Jazz Festival and Fano Jazz where they shared the evening performance together with the Astor Piazzolla- Gary Burton group. They also began to collaborate “live”with various solists including Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, Gianni Coscia, Antonello Salis and Peppe Servillo from Avion Travel. Their third disc entitled “Poemas” came out in the spring of 1999, dedicated to great contemporary latin-american literature. Their fourth CD, entitled "Cronologia del '900", was edited in October 2000, a co-production with the discographical label of the daily paper Il Manifesto.

The fifth CD "Origenes", was published in October 2001, also co-produced by Il Manifesto. The sixth, a two-CD album “ En Vivo” , was edited in June 2002; recorded in three live concerts at La Palma Club and edited by Cam Jazz. The seventh , “ Anniversario”, was edited in September 2002, a disc that signals the eighth year of Aires Tango and eleven years of Javier Girotto’s residence in Italy; recorded in Sofia (Bulgaria) with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, arrangements and direction of Paolo Silvestri, edited by Cam Jazz.

Two years later see Javier Girotto and Aires Tango’s new project and their eighth disc. From the encounter of the argentinian leader and the photographer Giancarlo Cerando the beautiful images with music resulted in a photographical reportage. We find unaltered the melodies written by Girotto and superbly performed by the four members of the group. The rhythms, the timbre of their music take us in an imaginary trip to Argentinia, through improvvisations that make this group really special by embracing such different contexts, blending them into a caleidoscopic whirlwind of emotions.

In 2006 the 9th disc “Tremila Cuori”, the new intense project of Girotto and Aires Tango appears for the thirtieth anniverdsary of the argentinian military coup d’ètat. A disc that comemorates and condemns the total disappearance of thirty thousand persons, intellectuals, workers and students alike, all part of a vast mass of progressive humanity evolving in that period. Girotto was only eleven at the time, but that period remained impressed on his soul which in the disc ( thirteen pieces ) manifested his evocative power, the terror provoked by the miltary, by the anger and the determination of the mothers of Plaza de Mayo, the scream of “Nunca Màs”, (never again). An accusation powerfully political, an extraordinary disc that signals the return, after four years, of the Aires Tango disc together with the Manifesto CD.

The music of Javier Girotto- Aires Tango mirrors faithfully the tangueira melody and jazz improvisation. The result. is a kind of treated tango, typically latin, for the melodies and rhythms that give it life, but less bound to the traditional tango canon. So then it becomes fertile ground for jazz inspired improvisation; this way the Aires Tango reaches a music of great expressive freedom and fascination. The echoes of the past melt with the most modern musical language.
